Counter field??

I have a form that many users are going to be using, at the same time. I would like each time a form is submitted, it automatically fill-in a field that is a counter. Does anyone know how to do this??

The idea of using the date, time, & initials - I thought would satisfy them, but they do not want that, they want sequential numbers, 6 digits long.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
